Insulating concrete formwork starts in Tealby, Lincolnshire

With foundations complete we’ve begun the next stage of this self-build in Tealby, Lincolnshire.

The main shell of this chalet bungalow is going to be built using our preferred method of construction, insulating concrete formwork (ICF for short).

ICF is a construction method that’s steadily growing in popularity as more and more people recognise the benefits of having a solid concrete structure which is great for thermal mass, combined with large amounts of insulation on the interior and exterior wall faces.

The polystyrene blocks are simply sat on top of the foundations (in this case a raft), and the first two courses which can be seen in the photo will then be filled with waterproof concrete to prevent water ingress/rising damp.

For structural reasons, some of the internal partitions at ground floor level are also going to be built using ICF, as the first floor system is going to be a cast in-situ concrete slab.  The concrete first floor will have excellent sound and heat absorption properties.  More photos to follow soon…
